Christopher Collins

Professor, Lab Director

I am currently on reduced workload at Ontario Tech University, working at Meta in Reality Labs Research as a Research Science Manager in the Toronto office.  At Meta, I work on next generation interaction technologies for AR/VR.

I am a Professor and former Canada Research Chair in Linguistic Information Visualization at Ontario Tech University, where I lead the vialab, a team of 10-15 staff and student researchers across all levels of study, from undergraduate interns to postdoctoral fellows and visiting research associates.

My research program follows two main branches – Human-Computer Interaction and Information Visualization.

My HCI work focuses on interaction design, including incorporating novel interaction devices, eye-tracking, pen+touch, and virtual/augmented reality into interactive scenarios to make systems more responsive to user needs and environmental context. I envision a future where underspecified interactions are resolved by machine learning and sensor systems that can accurately ‘guess’ a user’s intent and resolve these ambiguities through observing implicit interaction signals.

My information visualization research program as Canada Research Chair in Linguistic Information Visualization bridges the areas of Computational Linguistics and Information Visualization, with a particular focus on document content visualization, using information visualization to reveal uncertainty within linguistic data, and understanding relationships among linguistic datasets. I also create novel interaction techniques and guidance for information visualization, and I am investigating visual ways to explain the outcomes of machine learning and to communicate about uncertainty within AI systems. My publications, including the DocuBurst document content visualization system, have helped to open a new and thriving area of research in “Linguistic Visualization”. My work has been published in many venues, including IEEE VIS, ACM CHI, ACM ITS, EuroVis, and IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, as well as being featured in popular media such as the Toronto Star, CBS Sunday Morning, the New York Times Magazine, and CBC Radio.

I received my PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto in 2010. I value diversity in all forms and strive to create an academic environment that creates a sense of community which supports diverse learners and staff to achieve their academic and research goals.

I hold several positions within the information visualization community, including on the executive and organizing committee IEEE Vis Conference. I am a past member of the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee Executive and serve as an associate editor for both IEEE Computer Graphics & Applications and ACM Trans. on Interactive Intelligent Systems.

abstract = {Advances in large language models (LLMs) empower new interactive capabilities for wearable voice interfaces, yet traditional voice-and-audio I/O techniques limit users’ ability to flexibly navigate information and manage timing for complex conversational tasks. We developed a suite of gesture and audio-haptic guidance techniques that enable users to control conversation flows and maintain awareness of possible future actions, while simultaneously contributing and receiving conversation content through voice and audio. A 14-participant exploratory study compared our parallelized I/O techniques to a baseline of voice-only interaction. The results demonstrate the efficiency of gestures and haptics for information access, while allowing system speech to be redirected and interrupted in a socially acceptable manner. The techniques also raised user awareness of how to leverage intelligent capabilities. Our findings inform design recommendations to facilitate role-based collaboration between multimodal I/O techniques and reduce users’ perception of time pressure when interleaving interactions with system speech.},

abstract = {Technology has blurred the boundaries of our work and private lives. Using touch-free technology can lessen the divide between technology and reality and bring us closer to the immersion we once had before. This work explores the combination of eye-tracking glasses and a brain-computer interface to enable hand-free interaction with the camera without holding or touching it. Different camera modes are difficult to implement without the use of eye-tracking. For example, visual search relies on an object, selecting a region in the scene by touching the touchscreen on your phone. Eye-tracking is used instead, and the fixation point is used to select the intended region. In addition, fixations can provide context for the mode the user wants to execute. For instance, fixations on foreign text could indicate translation mode. Ultimately, multiple touchless gestures create more fluent transitions between our life experiences and technology.},

abstract = {Providing high-quality feedback on writing is cognitively demanding, requiring reviewers to identify issues, suggest fixes, and ensure consistency. We introduce AnnotateGPT, a system that uses pen-based annotations as an input modality for AI agents to assist with essay feedback. AnnotateGPT enhances feedback by interpreting handwritten annotations and extending them throughout the document. One AI agent classifies the purpose of each annotation, which is confirmed or corrected by the user. A second AI agent uses the confirmed purpose to generate contextually relevant feedback for other parts of the essay. In a study with 12 novice teachers annotating essays, we compared AnnotateGPT with a baseline pen-based tool without AI support. Our findings demonstrate how reviewers used annotations to regulate AI feedback generation, refine AI suggestions, and incorporate AI-generated feedback into their review process. We highlight design implications for AI-augmented feedback systems, including balanced human-AI collaboration and using pen annotations as subtle interaction.},

  • El-Assady, M. (2023). Levels of Explainability for Human-AI Interaction in Visual Text Analytics [Doctoral dissertation, University of Konstanz].

    PDF
    @phdthesis{ElAssady2023-01-23Level-76407,
abstract={The increasing demand for accountable decision-making with complex artificial intelligence systems has accelerated the need to understand, diagnose, and refine their underlying machine learning models. Hence, these three tasks have become the focus of explainable artificial intelligence research. This dissertation examines how we can make the refinement and optimization of content and topic modeling accessible to different stakeholders. Based on a theoretical framework for the explainability of artificial intelligence, we derive three Explainability Spaces that are tailored to four user groups. The Explainability Spaces construct a continuous spectrum and inform design decisions for interactive, explainable visual analytics systems. We place machine learning experts and domain experts at opposite ends of the spectrum, in the Model Space and the Semantic Space, respectively, and position model analysts and domain analysts in the middle ground, in the Input-Output Space.
The first main content chapter of this dissertation presents an encompassing conceptual framework for the central challenge of designing tailored mixed-initiative approaches to interactive and explainable machine learning. This framework combines aspects from the analysis domain and the machine learning model to introduce interaction and explainability processes and strategies. In addition, we propose and discuss the Explainability Spaces as a targeted design rationale for tailoring the tasks of understanding, diagnosis, and refinement to the main stakeholders of explainable artificial intelligence. Based on the proposed design space, we derive four instantiations that demonstrate the applicability of this framework. Hence, this dissertation’s remaining content chapters present four techniques, each utilizing novel intelligence augmentation paradigms to explain, diagnose, and refine comparable models.
For domain experts, we present a technique in the Semantic Space that allows them to externalize their domain knowledge while remaining model-agnostic. This approach maintains two content-representation hierarchies that operate within a shared vector space, enabling experts to perform guided machine teaching for topic-modeling refinement. Using word-embedding projections, experts can refine concept regions independent of a particular document collection or topic model. Their interactions directly affect the semantic relations of the underlying vectors, which, in turn, induce changes in the topic modeling.
For the domain analysts, we present a technique designed in the Input-Output Space (with a focus on semantics). It refines topic models through a user-driven, progressive reinforcement learning process that does not require a deep understanding of the underlying algorithms. The system initializes two model configurations based on a parameter-space analysis that enhances document separability and lets the models compete for the analyst’s satisfaction. Using automatic topic matching, topic summaries, and parameter distribution views, analysts can investigate the modeling results before providing document-based relevance feedback. This feedback is used to distill a user-endorsed topic distribution, allowing the system to train new model instances and restart the feedback process to iteratively converge on a refinement.
For the model analysts, we present a technique designed in the Input-Output Space (with a focus on the model). It untangles reply chains by combining supervised and unsupervised machine learning models to model thematic content relations. This approach enables analysts to create and compare various reconstruction models, enriching them with user-defined queries and rule-based heuristics. To investigate the models’ inner workings and performance, we visualize the model decision spaces, including all candidate relations considered. The proposed system enables model analysts to understand and diagnose models, thereby fine-tuning them using a rich set of computed and user-derived features.
Lastly, for the model experts, we present an intelligible topic modeling technique designed in the Model Space. It relies on an incremental hierarchical topic modeling algorithm to visualize the algorithmic decision-making process. Model experts can use this system to understand the model's inner workings across different parameters. To effectively assess the potential consequences of human interventions, we introduce speculative execution as a paradigm for creating user-steerable preview mechanisms. Whenever the measured model quality deteriorates, the system automatically triggers a speculative execution of various optimization strategies and requests external intervention. Experts compare the proposed optimizations to the current model state, previewing their effect on the next model iterations before applying one.
Overall, this dissertation presents four techniques that contribute to novel visual analytics workflows that follow tailored interaction and explainability methods. They are instantiations of the proposed Explainability Spaces. All techniques are designed to address the same tasks: understanding, diagnosing, and refining topic and thematic content models. We have conducted comparable evaluations of all techniques to assess their effectiveness across different stakeholders. Our evaluations confirm that we can enhance problem-solving and decision-making support for mixed-initiative systems through tailored interfaces using the proposed interaction and explainability workflows.},
