Professor, Lab Director
I am currently on reduced workload at Ontario Tech University, working at Meta in Reality Labs Research as a Research Science Manager in the Toronto office. At Meta, I work on next generation interaction technologies for AR/VR.
I am a Professor and former Canada Research Chair in Linguistic Information Visualization at Ontario Tech University, where I lead the vialab, a team of 10-15 staff and student researchers across all levels of study, from undergraduate interns to postdoctoral fellows and visiting research associates.
My research program follows two main branches – Human-Computer Interaction and Information Visualization.
My HCI work focuses on interaction design, including incorporating novel interaction devices, eye-tracking, pen+touch, and virtual/augmented reality into interactive scenarios to make systems more responsive to user needs and environmental context. I envision a future where underspecified interactions are resolved by machine learning and sensor systems that can accurately ‘guess’ a user’s intent and resolve these ambiguities through observing implicit interaction signals.
My information visualization research program as Canada Research Chair in Linguistic Information Visualization bridges the areas of Computational Linguistics and Information Visualization, with a particular focus on document content visualization, using information visualization to reveal uncertainty within linguistic data, and understanding relationships among linguistic datasets. I also create novel interaction techniques and guidance for information visualization, and I am investigating visual ways to explain the outcomes of machine learning and to communicate about uncertainty within AI systems. My publications, including the DocuBurst document content visualization system, have helped to open a new and thriving area of research in “Linguistic Visualization”. My work has been published in many venues, including IEEE VIS, ACM CHI, ACM ITS, EuroVis, and IEEE Transactions on Visualization and Computer Graphics, as well as being featured in popular media such as the Toronto Star, CBS Sunday Morning, the New York Times Magazine, and CBC Radio.
I received my PhD in Computer Science from the University of Toronto in 2010. I value diversity in all forms and strive to create an academic environment that creates a sense of community which supports diverse learners and staff to achieve their academic and research goals.
I hold several positions within the information visualization community, including on the executive and organizing committee IEEE Vis Conference. I am a past member of the IEEE Visualization and Graphics Technical Committee Executive and serve as an associate editor for both IEEE Computer Graphics & Applications and ACM Trans. on Interactive Intelligent Systems.

Interested in studying with me?
I am actively building the vialab research group at Ontario Tech − if you are passionate about HCI and Information Visualization, and you are seeking a great place for graduate studies in computer science, please contact me. I receive many requests to join the lab. To make sure you stand out, please consider including in your first message a description of why you want to study with me – what is it about the research at the vialab that interests you? What relevant skills and experience do you bring?
